The Minister of Basic Education is responsible for the development and implementation of Government policy on basic education.
As such, it is responsible for:
- The organization and operation of nursery and primary education;
- The design and determination of educational programs and the control of their implementation;
- Studies and research on the most appropriate methods for basic education;
- The development of management and evaluation principles for establishments at this level of education;
- The moral, civic and intellectual training of children of school age, in liaison with the Ministry of Youth and Civic Education;
- The design and dissemination of learner evaluation standards, rules and procedures;
- Monitoring and controlling the administrative and educational management of public and private establishments at this level of education;
- The development and monitoring of the implementation of the school map for this level of education;
- The development, analysis and maintenance of statistics for this level of education;
- From the book policy of this level of education;
- On the fight against illiteracy;
- Monitoring of private nursery and primary establishments providing secular and confessional education;
- Monitoring the construction of school buildings and infrastructure at this level of education;
- Monitoring the activities of parents’ and teachers’ associations (APEE);
- The management and continuing training of teaching and auxiliary staff subject to the responsibilities devolved to other Ministerial Departments.
It liaises between the Government and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in liaison with the Ministry of Arts and Culture and the Ministry of External Relations.
The Minister is assisted by a Secretary of State.
